What makes us think we're going to have any more luck
in Afganistan than
the Brits and the Russkies?

Only the unthinking, flag-waving patriots and the semi-delusional
think along
these lines.

Cause OUR angelic ground troops would NEVER fall prey
to the abundant supply of opium and hashish proffered
by Afghanistan's already difficult to navigate terrain.
And we'll interrupt combat and give 'em random urine
tests just to make sure.
And if it turns up positive, we'll send 'em home.

Becuse CNn will cover it with all sorts of special effects!
And the CON media
will do everything it can to hide the truth.
They wanted a memorial to Reagan in every county of
the nation, well they might
get it.

If the military thought they had their hands full with
guerillas in
Viet Nam, the haven't seen anything yet. I have a sickening
feeling
we're going to see alot of flag-draped coffins on TV.
Now's the time for science (No, not ICEKNIFE!) to come
out with remote
robot warriors. Where's Johnny 5 when you need him?

Cause this is different.
The Russkies sent in abused, poorly fed young draftees
to fight. The US is sending highly trained and motivated
elite forces.
Its different now.
The Afghanis were actully, even then, getting their
butts
kicked by the Ruskies.
We got them guns, ammo, trucks, machine guns, rockets,
grenades,
artillery, gasoline trucks, stinger missles and more,
with
aid from Saudi Arabia and CIA and Green Beret trainers.
That turned things around.
Now, they won't get that any more, the border with
Pakistan is sealed. You may smuggle in a backpack
of ammo and a few grenades, but thats it.
Things are a little different now.
And no more gasoline. When that runs out, no more
trucks, no more Toyoto pickups with the machine guns
mounted in the bed. And the roads are all but destroyed
from years of war and neglect anyway, they won't get
far.
So they have to abandon their artillery and other heavy
weapons.
Oh, and kiss the airports and the few airplanes they
have goodbye.
The tanks won't last a week either.
Things are different.
It used to be that the Afghani fighters could trek through
the rugged mounatins and count of getting food and supplies
from any village they came to.
Well, the Northern Alliance areas are off limits to
Bin Laden and the Talibanis.
Bordering areas were depopulated by the Taliban to
prevent the villagers from feeding their fighters, or
possibly
joining them.
No food here.
Things are differenrt.
And many parts of the country have been decimated by
drought,
the hardy Afghani farmers and herdsmen have starved
or given
up and moved to the refugee camps.
No food here. No gasoline. No grass for mules or horses.
No roads. Everything here will have to be carryed in
on
the back of a hungry Talibani cannon fodder.
Things are different now.
The Afghani West has taken a lot of abuse by the Talibanis.
They are Shiites, the Talibani, Sunni fanatics.
No help here, with the US on one side and Iran on the
other,
no help from this quarter.
Villagers in exchange for food and warm clothing and
a little cash
will make this a no-hide zone.
The Iranians have long sealed that border due to opium
smugglers.
And as Shiites, they are no pro-Talibani.
Things are well, ... different.
The old last ditch defense of the Afghani fighters was
to take to
the high mountains. They have small caches of food and
clothing
there. The Russians rarely bothered to chase them here.
At above 12,000 feet, there really aren't trails as
such,
you climb as much as walk these trails. No machines,
no
trucks, no cars, not even mules.
CIA trainers have noted they'd take to these areas carying
nothing
more than their rifles, three magazines of ammo, a heavy
blanket for a bedroll and a bag of bread and dried fruit.
But winter's coming.
No food, no firewood, and it gets down to -40 degrees
F
in these high mountains. They have their little caves
and dugouts, but they aren't good places to spend an
Afghanistan winter unless you enjoy dying of frost bite
as you slowly
starve.
Things are different.
When the Russians gave them a hard time, they'd bury
their weapons,
split up and take to the mountains.
Later they'd make their way back to areas where they
could get food,
more weapons, ammo and join in another campaign against
the Russians.
Now there's nobody with a fresh supply of material
hot from
Pakistan waiting for them on the other side of the mountains,
and no villagers to sustain them til they reach saftey.
Things are a lot different now.
It will take a week for them to run out of gas,
transportation, and they will have to abandon all they
cannot carry,
and in a cold winter where snow gets 6 feet deep, in
a land
beset by starvation and drough and empty villages, and
head for the
mountains.
The starving masses in the internal camps and the ruined
cities have no weapons, hate the Taliban, and are physically
incapable of doing anything about anything, even if
they cared.
And most of them for warm clothing, food, and a bit
of hope
for a future with no Taliban, no war, and no foreign
jehadis
will work with whoever feeds them.
Things are very different today.
If we want to take Afghanistan, it would be no real
problem. The problems will starve to death in the cold
mountains
or surrender.
And they wouldn't be missed by most Afghanis.
