Yesterday I tracked down the story about the SLO (Saturn Like Object).
I have already posted the following to alt.religion.scientology,under
the title "Hale-Bopp, SLOs and Heaven's Gate. Shoddy Science wins
again!" but forgot to include any other groups that might be
interested. So I am reposting the story as I found it.

Well I have spent some time tracking down the SLO (Saturn Like Object)
that Chuck Shramek took a photo of the night of November 14, 1996 in
Houston Tx. What a mind bending story for sure. I will recap some of
the info that I have run across, but will allow the web pages to tell
most of the story.
That night, according to Chuck he took a series of pictures (161 from
5:55pm till 6:27pm) of the Hale-Bopp Comet. He claims that the first
ten minutes worth of shots were not very good, nor the last few
minutes. That left about 15 to twenty minutes of good photos. The
equipment that he used was a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (Meade
LX-200). He also used a CCD Imager. The resulting pictures showed what
Chuck Shramek called an anomalous object. It has come to be known as
the "Saturn-Like Object" or SLO. When Mr. Shramek checked his star
atlas program (MegaStar, by all accounts a very good program), he did
not find an object that was supposed to be where the SLO was located.
He concluded that the object was very large, about 3 to 4 times the
size of the earth. He also concluded that it was too bright to be a
star. According to Mr. Shramek the same day he uploaded the image and
a post that said "Hey, does anyone know what this object is"
For a look at what Mr. Shramek thinks the SLO REALLY is check out
http://www.NeoSoft.com/~cshramek/
After reading his homepage, one thing becomes apparent. He does not
believe it is a star.
Yet that is exactly what it was. Due to some settings in his star
atlas program, and dew residue on the collector lens Shramek gave
birth to the SLO. It has been shown that the SLO is an 8th magnitude
star, called by the romantic name SAO 141894.
To see the proof that the SLO is SAO 141894 see
http://www.halebopp.com/sloa.htm
It is enlightening to say the least.
Later the night of Nov. 14th Art Bell had Chuck Shramek on his
national radio show. Art seems to be a big believer in things that go
bump in the night, and this was right up his alley. He attacked the
www.halebopp.com site and it's author Russell Sipe for pointing out
the fact that the SLO was in fact a star. He even went as far to air
the claims of "The Farsight Institute" who were "remote-viewing" the
SLO. They claimed that it was a metallic sphere inhabited by aliens. A
man named Courtney Brown director of the Institute then claimed that
he had gotten a photo from an astrophysicist that worked at a "Top Ten
University". As the pressure mounted for the name of this person, a
set of photos were released. They were complete fakes. You can see a
comparison of the fake photo (with the inclusion of another SLO) and
the real photo that was taken by Dr. David Tholen at the Institute of
Astronomy, University of Hawaii at
http://www.artbell.com/compare.html.
Art Bell turned on Brown, and Brown was completely discredited.
On Friday night March 7 Art Bell had Dr Alan Hale the co-discoverer of
the Hale-Bopp Comet. Bell had done a 180 degree turn, going as far to
say that he thought that people would be simply crazy if they didn't
just go out and enjoy the comet.
You can read about the complete story at
http://www.halebopp.com/outworld.htm
At one point there were alot of audio files that covered the show
featuring Chuck Shramek and Courtney Brown. You can no longer find
them on that site.
I have run across some evidence that the people that were a member of
Heaven's Gate, were aware of the Art Bell show. They became convinced
of the fact that there was a U.F.O. following the Hale-Bopp Comet. The
rest, as they say, is history.
Once again we see the danger of pseudo-science. Perhaps if we did a
better job at teaching what science is and what it does, tragedies
like this could be avoided!
