Often we ignore or have an incomplete picture of the humanity of the fetus.
In my book, Is the Fetus Human?, I present various evidence that shows
, without any doubt, the humanity of the unborn. Excerpting from my
research, we now know that, for instance, a careful study of Scripture
shows the humanity of the unborn. For example, Luke 1:41 states and the
"baby leapt in the womb" while Genesis 25:22-25 states that the "children
struggled in her womb". In addition, various religious beliefs, including
Catholic, Orthodox, and some other Christian beliefs, as well as orthodox
Judaism and other religions, believe that the fetus is human and also
believe that life in the womb is sacred. John Calvin, a reformer in the
Protestant tradition, stated that "the fetus, though enclosed in the womb
of its mother, is already a human being". Biologically, too, we know that
the fetus is human: the heart of the unborn beats as early as 18 days,
fingernails are present by 11 to 12 weeks, the fetus moves his/her arms and
legs by 6 weeks, at 43 days his/her brain waves can be read. A.W. Liley,
in an article entitled "The Foetus as a Personality", stated that the
"fetus has been moving his limbs and trunk since about 8 weeks". Dr. Liley's
research shows that the fetus controls the pregnancy, the fetus is conscious,
the fetus is alert, the fetus sees, and the fetus hears. Legally, in the
United States, there are still laws on the books that protect the fetus in
regards to accidents in some states; for instance, if a pregnant woman
is killed and the fetus is also harmed, some existing state laws consider
that situation a case where two individuals, the mother and the unborn
child, have been harmed. The fetus, though, is still not afforded
universal protection by law in many places worldwide. We can only pray
and hope that one day the humanity of the unborn is accepted. Finally,
let me also state that modern technology, such as the fetascope and the
ultrasound, show the unborn child moving within the mother's womb; the
fetus moves within the mother's womb before the mother feels the movement
of the fetus.
