Beat : Beatnik :: SubG : ?

I was wondering...when the pinks take over the concepts
of "BOB" and Slack, like they turned the Beat Generation
into the Beatniks, what sort of cute caricature will emerge?

Will Tyvek-clad "slackniks" be hanging out in North Beach,
listening to deafening white noise, buiding sex robots,
and eating squid out of hollowed out human skulls--
Like *they* think they could be *us*?

Been.

Done.

That fad came and went in the late 80s. When it starts up again, just
in time for me and Philo to get some retirement $, it'll be a fad based
on the NOSTALGIA FAD of our original apocalyptic salvation UFO novelty
fad. Which was itself based on "Bob's" original 1950s prophetic vision,
which he received when he stepped in that puddle of water while he
diddled the Build-Ur-Own-Tele-Vision when it was still plugged in. He
may well have been drinking, too. In fact, we generally assume that he
was drinking beer.

But that only means that MORE Normals will die horribly but slowly in
the dragged-out End of All Things. I'm not sure if this delay in the
Rupture is a good thing or a bad thing.

When they try to co-opt a cultural trend, they always first identify
the parts of it that are most non-threatening and acceptable to the
mainstream, and then create a simulacrum which exaggerates the
acceptable and marginalizes the unacceptable.

So when the beats were on the road eating benzedrine and hating all
things american, popular culture produced ... Maynard G Krebbs, who
talked like a 'beatnik' and had the goatee but noticeably didn't do
drugs have sex or oppose anything. And most importantly, he was very
obviously a feckless inferior being, deferential to the clean-scrubbed
main character of the show. The beta male.

When rock and roll threatened america we co-opted. Elvis' ass got
slapped in the army and in his place a thousand Elvis-a-likes sprung
up. They had the harelip and to a certain extent the dance but only
the non-threatening parts of it. Eager to please. Fine young men.
No attitude at all. Then when Elvis got out of the army, in his
desire to recapture his career, -he- coopted -them-. And became an
Elvis imitator imitator.

And so on. Hippy revolutionaries became cute cartoon caricatures on
tv and in movies. Punk became fashionable. Grunge became a fashion
statement.

What saves the Church of the Subgenius is that Subgeniuses don't HAVE
any redeeming characteristics. There ISN'T a fuzzy bunny caricature
equivalent of Legume or Hellpope Huey. There isn't -anything- 'good'
about it.

And that is as it should be ...

Excellent point. But for the record, I in fact *do* think of Legume and
Hellpope Huey as big fuzzy wuzzy bunnies. They're just so cuuuuuuute...
