COPYRIGHT AND ROYALTY AND PERMISSIONS QUESTION TIME AGAIN!
Regarding project: SubSITE on CD-R and SubGenius Multimedia CD-R
So RevDrJack donates this CD rewritable burner to us. I immediately do
two things: make safety copies of all my software and files, and make
two audio CDs to SELL, because frankly, The SubGenius Foundation
company has been on SHAKY GROUND INDEED since X-Day 98. Orders
decreased -- jeez, why could that be? Anyway, we're desperate to crank
out new product that we can make cheaply and that the hardcore faithful
will buy (and love). XX-Day was about to happen when I suddenly had the
BRILLIANT IDEA, HEY, I can make MORE copies of SubSITE (minus the HoS
ra files and the huger videos) on CD-Rs and sell 'em at Brushwood!
That'd pay for free copies for my pals! (We really are down to that
level of cash flow.)
Well,I made 10 each and I think about 3 sold at XX-Day and Starwood.
HOWEVER! I remember back when Lizzardo made a limited edition of 10 CDs
with a.b.s. collected on 'em, for us to sell at X-Day, and we didn't,
because I thought the artists should get 'em first. (Also a lot of it
was uncreditted or wrongly creditted. I still have most of those
because the artists already DID have 'em.) So we better start talking
very small time bizness here before anybody gets the wrong idea.
If the sales of SubGenius audio cassettes and our one existing devival
Cd are any indication, this is almost a moot point since we're talking
TINY volumes, like 10 a month. BUT, we're selling this SubSITE CD-R for
$30 (I figure that's cheap; video games are twice that and this is like
a video game almost). Well, there's a fuck of a lot of YOUR ART on
SubSITE, in the art mines section, if you're one of the a.b.s.
regulars. And the SUbG Multimedia CD-R holds everything ELSE that's not
on the SubSITE CD-R, such as ALL our wav files, ALL the movies, PLUS...
everything I copped from a.b.s. from X-Day 98 till XX-Day 99!! (Not
EVERYTHING, but all the good bulldada and Dobbsian stuff.)
Just contemplating how many megs of LeMur's art are on these discs is
frightening.
Atom Funway's entire SubGenius art career is documented on SubSITE.
The newer one (Multimedia) also contains the gigantic, vast archives of
IMBJR art that hain't been stashed on SubSITE yet.
But then we encounter "the REVELATION X Royalties problem." A zillion
contributors and a nightmare of percentage breakdowns that usually
amount to PENNIES (like the Steve Jackson game, which ended up paying
$13 per art piece!). Here's a PARTIAL list of just the fairly recent
directories I'm stashing art in:

Just sending out CONTRIBUTOR COPIES is a nightmare, in other words, not
to mention the calculating and disbursement of teeny tiny royalties.
Onan Canobite can testify to the futility of getting a royalty check
from THREE FISTED TALES OF "BOB" for 35 cents.
The Steve Jackson game was a massive headache, logistically, and only
about 25 artists were involved.
This CD involves HUNDREDS. Of course, MOST of those contributed only a
little. 5 or 6 people probably contributed the majority of the
bandwidth. If you go by bytes posted, LeMur is the most prolific
SubGenius type artist who has ever walked the Earth, with IMBJR a
distant second followed by Funway. I would hardly be in the running.
Every written thing I ever committed to disk fits on a 500 k stuffed
text file. Paul Mavrides and John Hagen Brenner, graphic Dads of the
Church, are hardly anywhere to be seen on SubSITE -- except that they
drew those HIEROGLYPHS that everybody now uses via BobCo fonts! And
what of KEN HUEY whose Dobbshead rendering is ubiquitous among ALL our
pics! But wait -- my HOURS OF SLACK in Real Audio are 6 megs EACH!
WHEW!!! THOUGHT I WAS IN TROUBLE THERE! But WAIT! Half of Hour of Slack
these days is ESO! Should I pay CHAS SMITH... or should I pay Chas AND
Dave? But then the STAMP would cost more than the PAY! And wait a
minute, the Dobbshead is a TRADEMARK owned by ME! I should get 5 cents
every time it's downloaded or worked into stolen news photos! Whu...
wha...
Anyway, you see my quandry. I have this GREAT PRODUCT that only a VERY
FEW PEOPLE WANT (about 5 so far). But maybe someday EVERYONE will want
it. Maybe it's ALREADY a big selling bootleg CD-R in Taiwan. Who knows.
How do I square it with the arteests though? We have literally NOTHING
to pay up front. Our little cottage industry is in debt. The whole idea
behind the CDs was to SAVE OUR VERY ASSES since they're cheap (though
time consuming) to produce but can be sold for a decent profit.
Friday Jones suggested that I offer all the artists a FREE SPECIAL AD
or PAGE or LINK or whatnot. Actually, there probably IS a link to your
websites on SubSITE, but it's buried in our generally fucked up web
links section ("The Volunteer Section"). I could add a revised special
title page to the CD that put the contributor's chosen pages (or
whatnot) right up front.
What do you think?
The 10 copies that exist now are exactly like what was on the web
server on June 6, 1999. I can easily revise the intro pages for this
CD-R for future editions.
I have almost given up on trying to sell SubGenius projects to the Con.
Con publishers reject our print AND audio projects, usually in a very
respectful and polite way, strangely enough, and besides, with
self-publishing-and-distributing, though you only sell one trillionth
as many units, you get $5 each instead of 5 cents.
We're one of the very LAST HOLDOUTS from the '80s "underground instant
print" explosion that has survived. The Church has outlasted almost ALL
other bizarre-ass attempts to kickstart weirdos and buttfuck the Con,
BACK. We helped start the self-publishing "zine" revolution (Factsheet
5 was initially inspired by the early '80s Stark Fist Other Mutants
section) and we have successfully made the transition over to
"cyberspace" WHILE IMPROVING OUR PRINTED ZINE OUTPUT! AND the Hour of
Slack has been on the air since 1985.
The secret to our longevity despite our Irritation Factor is that we
JUST BARELY SURVIVE, and by SCRABBLING. Sometimes our scrabbling isn't
enough and we have had to stoop low, and let the debts run up to those
who have been NICEST to us, those who will be the last to complain and
CUT US OFF.
So I guess Jesus and I are PRAYING TO YOU to forgive us and cut us some
Royalties Slack until we sell enough of these CD-Rs to pay for the
contributor copies.
Also, I don't have current addresses for contributors. Many of you
a.b.s. superstars are, ironically enough, unsaved Pinks and nonentities
in the eyes of Dobbs, having never sent in your $30, and thus destined
NEVER to be Ruptured. (Whereas we paid-up SubGenii at least get to
reasonably HOPE for Rupture year after year.)
We found out during his TRIAL that Papa Joe Mama had never actually
BOUGHT A MEMBERSHIP... AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM!
NOTICE -- I started out begging from ya'll and ended up trying to SELL
you something. This way you KNOW that I'm DOING MY JOB.

darn... the prospects look pretty bleak for financing that course 'learn

doing something productive with my life another year. but i'll keep the

You can have mine for free, Stang. Most of it involves some degree of
copyright violation anyway. I'll probably PAY for my own copy, since I feel
a bit guilty at not being a dues-paying member. Plus, I believe all that
crap in Rev-X about the more you buy, the better chance you have of being
saved. It's just that I'm poor, and live in Australia. One day though, I
will send a cheque and an order slip that simply says:
ONE OF EVERYTHING PLEASE!

And there came one of the seven messengers, who were having the seven vials,
and he spake with me, saying to me, `Come, I will shew to thee the judgment
of the great whore, who is sitting upon the many waters, with whom the kings
of the earth did commit whoredom; and made drunk from the wine of her whoredom
were those inhabiting the earth; and he carried me away to a wilderness in the
Spirit, and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet-coloured beast, full of names
of evil-speaking, having seven heads and ten horns, and the woman was arrayed
with purple and scarlet-colour, and gilded with gold, and precious stone, and
pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and uncleanness
of her whoredom, and upon her forehead was a name written: `Secret, Babylon
the Great, the Mother of the Whores, and the Abominations of the earth.'
I want $.05 per CD sold and some of whatever drugs those guys had.
