>A very interesting, scary article in the new Newsweek:
Remember what Republicans think are "free and fair" elections.
"In his remarks, Bush mentioned nothing of political chaos that marred
the elections. Later, White House press secretary Scott McClellan
played down the difficulties and proclaimed it "a great day for the
people of Afghanistan."
"Voting day passed relatively peacefully, but it ended in political
turmoil as the 15 candidates opposing interim President Hamid Karzai
threatened to boycott its result because of alleged widespread fraud.
All 15 charged that many voters cast multiple ballots because
supposedly indelible ink used to identify those who had voted was
removed easily.
"Officials of the independent United Nations (news - web sites)-Afghan
election body refused to stop the voting to avoid denying many Afghans
the right to cast their first vote ever.
"You've seen a lot of enthusiasm. ... There was large voter turnout.
Free and fair elections are taking place," McClellan said. "All
indications are that the election has been peaceful and orderly."
But hey, give Afghanistan credit. Most industrial nations have trouble
getting 50% voter turnout on a good day. Afghanistan will probably
manage 300%, 400% or better!

A better article would be:
"The proud and noble tradition of voter fraud
in America. How everyone does it, everyone
complains about it when they lose, and how the
public loves it."
They could write about how politicians used to
buy votes with whiskey, and how people had to
wave their ballots around to show everybody who
they had voted for, or else not get paid and
maybe beat up. And then they could write about
"Bloody Kansas", and later how southerners were
kept from the polls before they turned the tables
and kept the negroes from the polls.
They could do pages about big city political
machines, and how your job depended on who you
voted for, and how the Catholic Church ordered
its cultlike followers how to vote.
And Gerrymandering. Wow, huge topic. Then the
Jim Crow laws and how the TWO political parties
keep other parties from electing candidates by
passing laws for LEGAL voter fraud.
Finally, that damn near EVERY State in the US
is run by officials more than willing to tamper
with the election outcome to favor their party,
and how the political parties and their supporters
regularly cheat with absentee ballots and
registering and voting the dead and felons and how
TENS OF THOUSANDS of people vote TWICE in different
States. And why NOBODY in either party wants to
force people to show ID when voting.
Yep, it DAMN WELL could happen again. In fact, the
odds of it NOT happening are about the same as Jesus
coming back this election cycle to run for office.
