Actor Christopher Reeve, star of the Superman films of the 1970s and
80s, has died.

The 52-year-old had been suffering from an infection as a result of a
pressure wound and died on Sunday, his publicist Wesley Combs said.

He suffered a cardiac arrest at his New York home and slipped into a
coma, Mr Combs added.

Reeve was paralysed nine years ago when he broke his neck after being
thrown from a horse.

He later became an advocate for spinal cord injury research. In recent
years, he had regained sensation in some parts of his body.

He had also returned to acting, appearing in a 1998 production of Rear
Window, a modern version of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller about a man in
a wheelchair who becomes convinced that a neighbour has been murdered.

[rest omitted for brevity]

By coincidence, I was watching 'Gray Lady Down' yesterday (ITV1, UK TV)
and spotted a very young, yet familiar, face. 1978, minor role.

This morning, his death was headline news on BBC Radio Four.

Sorry he broke his neck and died and all, but it's a real stretch to call
Reeve an actor.

Well, Superman he obviously wasn't.

Oh, I dunno. I was mighty impressed with him in "Deathtrap" with
Michael Caine. He seemed more of a stage guy than a film guy to me. He
wasn't an "ideal" Superman, if we're even going to address such a
silly role, but he didn't tarnish the character ONE damned bit; he was
plausaible fun and that's plenty. You'll never hear his career spoken
of in hushed, reverential tones, true, but overall, he was a solid man
who even had the class to do a guest spot on "Smallville" as a Stephen
Hawking surrogate. That's rather cool. He kept acting, which is
laudable. He was a team player on the set, which has huge merits and
is part of why he kept finding acceptance for his post-trauma
projects.

It also took some brass ones to gather himself up and push for stem
cell research. God only knows how much focus it took to get past being
seriously pissed about his accident and be an actor of sorts, an
advocate and a mensch, simultaneously, locked into that damned chair.
He was even directing an animated feature when he died and it will be
finished because he was at it long enough to give it the impetus it
needed to hit the leaping-off point.

Nope, you can't say a bad word for a man who hangs in there like
that. Good show, Chris.

Well, NOW he is. I liked him an awful lot in both of those movies,
though. Not enough to throw ashes in my hair and beat my brow in
mourning, but enough to enjoy watching him in roles where he wasn't
wearing bright red boots.
