This story is unfortunately true. 20 some years ago, I hadda go down to the
Columbus, Ohio branch of the place I worked at to minister to some ailing
minimainframe. The ministrations took us right to dinner time, but were
extremely tiring. SO, me and my fellow ministers wanted nothing more than a
simple dinner and then off to bed so we could get up to apply further
ministrations at 6 AM the next morning.
This place was off I-71 on the northside of Columbus, near the brewery
there. Denny's, at the time (1984?) was a relatively new phenomenon, too.
Columbus, as it turns out, is a relatively adventurous city, unlike
Cleveland. Many corporate entities and chain stores and restaurants use
that town as a breeding ground for middle America.
We were surprised to find that this was the FIRST WET DENNY'S we had ever
seen. The only one any of us had ever encountered that sold liquor with
dinner. Freaking weird. Obviously a trial balloon, some marketeers idea
let loose on the people of C.
But this is Ohio. While we were there about 5:30 PM, and being of sound
mind, we inquired...was there a HAPPY HOUR?
But no, in this babble belt part of the world, there would be no discount as
to the price of an individual drink. We would have to purchase drinks at
their regular prices. To sell them at a discount would cloud the taxation
picture, you see.
However, while they can't discount the price of a SINGLE drink, there's no
provision against selling them TWO FOR ONE, giving the other one FREE. The
provider of a FREE drink is presumed to have paid the tax, so there is no
problem here. And to discourage the consumption of alcohol in the state of
Ohio, you could avail yourself of this opportunity ONLY ONCE. Clever those
lawmakers. Open the door, but allow only one trip inside.
I can't seem to recall any more of the details of that fateful Denny's
dinner, because we all ordered 4 drinks apiece, taking them at their word
about the workings of the local liquor laws. There was hardly enough room
amidst the glasses for the dinner plates. Sigh.
That could have been the best evening of my entire work life. If only I
remembered...
