SECONDS

I don't remember now who recommended to me the movie Seconds, but
whoever it was, thanks. Unless you are one of my ENEMIES in which case
GO TO HELL.
Mrs. N and I both wondered how Seconds was accepted on its initial
release because it really does go much too far on more than one
occasion. Hats off to James Wong Howe for going all Avant Garde on our
asses camerawise. I sure didn't think it would turn out like that.
Brother!
I think there ought to be a SubGenius Goodfilm section on modemac's
website because there are a lot of VERY TWISTED or JUST PLAIN ODD movies
like this which are not bad at all, or at least not bad entirely. Such
as, just off the top of my head, The Swimmer, You're A Big Boy Now, The
President's Analyst, The Loved One, Putney Swope, Where's Poppa?. And I
don't even know how I would classify Oh Dad Poor Dad, Momma's Hung You
In The Closet And I'm Feeling So Sad, and Can Hieronymous Merkin Ever
Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness? except under "Movies with
titles ten words long or longer."

"Putney Swope" is funny just for the ads, also the Mensa guy. And President Mimeo.
I'd watch "King of Hearts" again, too.

How about "Being There"?
Sure, there's not a lot of avant-garde experimental stuff in that one, but
the content is pretty damned SubGenial.

Again, the categorization problem.
Bad badfilm.
Good badfilm.
Bad and good mediocrefilm.
Good and bad goodfilm
AND EVERYBODY WILL ARGUE OVER WHICH MOVIE GOES IN WHICH CATEGORY.
"Being There" would go in "Good Goodfilm."
What Nenslo's talking about is more like Odd ObscureFilm which is not
exactly bad or "good." Many movies with Alan Arkin fall into this
category.
I have been wanting to see Seconds too, have heard stuff about that for
years, never saw it. NO HURRY THOUGH. Like EVERY movie except those as
yet unfinished, it's IN THE CAN.

See, now I didn't like that film AT ALL. I thought it was one of
Seller's worst roles, in fact, what was he doing in a film based on a
Kosinski novel? That guy is an utter* fraud.
* notice how I avoided the obvious "cow" pun?
That took great self-control, let me tell you.

as I recall, Seconds was received very badly and did Hudson's career a lot of harm.
it is a Top Notch movie, however

I was of the impression that "badfilm" didn't mean "awful movie," any
more than "pink" means "homosexual" or "the color pink." But heck, I
don't think "Bob" himself knew what he was talking about when he came
up with these terms.
One person has already added a new section there for "Movie Favourites
Of the Subgenius," so as not to confuse readers with the movies I like.
That's well and good, except I've already said that anyone there can
enter ANY entries they want -- it's my Web site, but I'm opening up to
EVERYONE to make their own additions. If you think I deserve to be
anally raped becaue I think "Braveheart" is a silly showcase for Mel
Gibson's ego, then go ahead and SAY SO.
Maybe I should re-re-arrange the movies section so that it says
outright: "Movies That Rock," "Movies That Suck," and "Movies That
REALLY Suck."

Hey, Stang, I have a copy of Seconds in the iDRMRSR video vault here.
Yer membership is good if'n you'd like to borrow it.
I agree with Nenslo, this is a really good flick that plays out like an
extended Twilight Zone episode with some beatnik (hippies weren't invented
yet) overtones.
I believe this was filmed at about the time humans discovered they could get
naked and the man could stick that man part into the woman's you know what
if enough music, drugs, and alcohol were used, and only under those
circumstances, which is kind of what the whole flick builds up to sort of.
But now in this latterday in which all the dark corners of S*X are brightly
illuminated, it's lots of fun to watch that pole smoking Rock Hudson pretend
he'd like to horizontal mambo with a grrl. That's AAAACCCTTTIIINNGGG!

I was going to say "that was me" but a google search seems to suggest that I
recommended it to *KIBO*, not to you.
HOW DARE YOU PRETEND TO BE KIBO?!
since we're thanking people for recommending movies now (instead of killing
them,) I figure I will thank Stang for "Napoleon Dynamite" and "American
Splendor". he's not the first person to recommend those to me, but he was the
last, and they were pretty good. "Napoleon Dynamite" has a sort of slow pace
that comes close to annoying me a couple times, but every bit is pretty
funny.
my most recent movie experience was either "Scarlet Street" (bank teller
turned outsider artist doesn't get credit for anything he does, including
murder) or "Meet John Doe" (ballplayer-cum-Jesus gets used by proto-Bush
political party.) both disturbing, in their own way, which is why they have
been labeled as "classics" and quietly shoved to the side.

A really outstanding movie. Shows both Fritz Lang and Edward G.
Robinson at their best. Lang ought to get much more credit among the
casual viewers, not just among filmmakers who rightly revere him.
We recently watched The Whole Town Is Talking, in which Robinson, as the
ninny clerk who looks exactly like the ruthless killer, is AMAZINGLY
funny, howl out loud funny. You know from the beginning that it will
end with a wedding but how it gets to that point is a lot of fun.
I just now watched the original Michael Caine "Get Carter," which showed
me a british squalor I rarely get to see. Bingo Halls, Betting
Parlours, and some of the damnedest wallpaper I have ever seen.

and filmed about 10 miles from here. the multi-storey carpark is still there - I used to park there
every day when I worked nearby. Gateshead really IS a shithole.
