These early Media Barrages are very TEXAS. There was
just us, and the
Texas radio preachers most of the time. Dallas radio
was about half
crazy preachers in those days. KSKY, Voice of the Gospel
was the best
of them. We weren't all Texans, but some were from savage
ARKANSAS,
which more than balanced out the Californians' civilized
ways.
I would record movie soundtracks off my black and white
TV by tying
wires directly to what had previously been going straight
to my TV's
little mono speaker, then feeding that into a cassette
recorder while
watching movies being broadcast. A sound guy named Shepp
Webb showed me
how to do that and gave me a ton of old reel to reel
tapes of various
odd obscure TV and radio clips. Puzzling Evidence had
been making
collages with home gear for years before we encountered
him by way of
Mavrides and the Rip Off Press trash can, where Mavrides
found Pamphlet
#1.
Recording everything on the crazy fringe TV and radio,
and all of his
life, is a young man's job. At my age a fellow should
be making his own
crazy TV and radio for others to record, and finally
getting around to
editing the stuff he recorded for the first 50 years.
There aren't many of those FOR REAL old hellfire country
preachers
around any more; like family-owned shops, they've been
replaced by
corporate chain religions. BUT THERE ARE STILL HELLFIRE
SUBGENIUS
PREACHERS, and there are still COLLEGE, INDEPENDENT
AND PIRATE RADIO
STATIONS. (And crazy religious stations.)
At 6X-Day, my heart was SO ENGLADDENED to hear the NEW
YOUNG REDNECKS
with HELLFIRE IN THEIR BLOOD, preaching "Bob,"
like Asquire from
Kentucky, Sinphaltimus from NYC, Carter LeBlanc, why,
it bout laks to
brang a tear to muh ah.
LET THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN!
Incidentally my dad recently informed me that his grandfather
and THAT
guy's grandfather with BOTH PREACHERS. My MOM'S grandfather
was ALSO a
preacher. In SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, at the turn of the
century! (The PRIOR
turn of the century!)
Makes me feel like that poor sumbitch in "Wise Blood."
Anyway, glad you liked that truly ancient crumbling
tape. There are 3
more very much like it which I intend to also digitize.

Well, thanks -- truly, thanks -- for helping relieve
this 41-year-old of the
creative guilt he's been suffering for the past couple
years onaccounta all
these blank tapes I've been "saving up for later."
My task is clear, now:
"To your soundboards, O Israel!"

Note; material for that history book I'm bound to keep
buggin' you about - the
Book of the Obgenius. Many future Yeti will thank you
profusely if you give an
account of these first encounters and chance meetings,
leading inexorably to
the Meatings of The Golden Age of "Bob".
