How to Make Alt.Slack Not Suck

So I'm at my folks' house in Texas, on another computer, with a copy of
the Thoth newsreader program that does NOT have my usual killfile
filters installed, and I look at alt.slack, and BOY does it SUCK.

So I quickly select one of the hundreds of gurdjieff posts, and pull
down the "killfile this author" menu window, and killfile him/her/it.
Then I do the same with "madgello" (formerly "Meow").

I close the program, re-open it, download alt.slack again, and:

VIOLA!!

ALT.SLACK NO LONGER SUCKS.

I strongly suggest that newcomers to this newsgroup closely examine
your brower or newsreading program and see if you have any kind of
"killfile" capability. Judicious use of this handy tool can change a
tedious, sad, embarrassing newsgroup into a really kick-ass one, simply
by eliminating one or two mal-aligned Normals.

Some may prefer to killfile ME, but it won't do much, because I don't
post all that much anyway on alt.slack. The place to killfile me would
be alt.binaries.slack, which I routinely ruin for many people with my
huge movie and audio posts.

I had already killfiled the latter, but now that I've taken your advice and
killfiled the former I see exactly what you mean. Who says you're old and
obsolete?

I do the same thing, except with a scorefile instead of a killfile. YES,
THAT'S RIGHT, GURDJIEFF GETS A LOW SCORE, BUT I DON'T ACTUALLY KILL HIM.

when I came back to alt.slack there were TWO THOUSAND MESSAGES, so it took
a while to set up a decent scorefile. first to go were anyone crossposting
to certain groups. next went a couple special people -- probably the same
people, although Stang's comment is the first time I noticed that WE ALL
DISLIKE THE SAME PEOPLE.

then people I've seen in alt.slack *and* in person got a score boost, to
move 'em up the list.

the people in the "grey" scores might get read if they're replying to an
otherwise interesting thread, or to me, if I have the time and am feeling
generous. people in white (no score modification) don't always get read,
either; nothing personal, but I don't have time for everyone. still, I keep
an eye out for anyone who deserves to move up. or down.

usenet who are NOT in my killfile became a shorter list than the killfile
itself.
