Earlier, I would have said no, but every once in a while
I get a whiff of
it.
Not very strong, mind you. If I close the door to this
room, I can't smell
it at all, but then if I sniff around the edges, it's
definitely out there.
But if I go outside, I can't smell it again, unless
I turn away from the
direction of the breeze, and there it is again...faintly.
Seems to me as I write this that it's getting perceptibly
stronger.
No...now it's faded away just a bit.
Maybe a slightly herbal, chemical scent...with a trace
of bus exhaust,
possibly some fresh cut grass. Kind of like the aftertaste
of the food in
the Indian joint, maybe a touch of cilantro, a hint
of allspice. Then again
it's raining, and it has this musty note, like a damp
basement, or the
inside of your tennis shoes.
Or like that stuff your mom used to rub on your chest
when you were 4 and
had the croup. Though not exactly. Possibly a paint
thinner tang. Maybe a
little urine, well dried, such as in a phone booth in
NYC. But milder,
almost like it wasn't there.
But it is.

Dont worry, its just the Cleveland smell, you had been
used to it before,
now you nose for some reason woke up.
It had been my first time in Cleveland in years, and
as we approach the
city, I blurt out.. "whats that nasty smell?"
"Cleveland." All the subgenii in the car
replied.
Yup.
