The first documented case of autoerotic asphyxia was
that of a priest in the
late 1800's. This priest endeavored to show a condemned
women that death by
strangulation wasn't such a bad way to die, in order
to ease her fears prior
to execution. He hung himself in her jail cell for a
full two minutes before
allowing her to release him and reported feeling giddy
and euphoric. She was
much comforted. A month later, the priest was found
dead in his office,
hanging from the ceiling with his pants down at his
knees.
The following cases are attempts by the FBI to study
the incidence of
autoerotic fatalities.
Case #1
'A thirty year old married man had been left alone
for three hours while
his wife, who was eight months' pregnant and their two
children went to a
church related activity. Upon her return, she discovered
him dead in an
upstairs bedroom that he was converting to a nursery.
The victim was
suspended from a rope that encompassed his neck and
was attached to a
pulley. A second rope passed over the pulley and ended
in his left hand. The
pulley was hooked in a metal bar which extended between
two beams in the
roof. His feet were touching the floor, his pants were
around his ankles,his
underwear was semen stained in front and his shirt had
been rolled up to
expose his chest. The cause of death, as determined
by the medical
examiner, was asphyxiation due to hanging. The victim
was described as
having been in excellent spirits, eagerly anticipating
the birth of his
third child. He was also elated over the fact that he
had successfully
followed a diet and excercise program, resulting in
a 40 lb weight loss.'
Case #2
'A forty-nine year old man was discovered lying dead
on a tile floor in his
home. He was wearing only a T-shirt. A bare wire ran
from an electrical
transformer near his body into his urethra. Semen was
on his left thigh and
had flowed to his buttock where it made contact with
the tile floor causing
a ground effect. A large burn mark was present on his
left buttock. Autopsy
disclosed cauterization of the foreskin on his penis
and burns of the distal
inch of the urethra, the distance to which the wire
had been inserted.'
Case #3
'A twenty four year old computer operator was found
dead in his apartment.
He was naked except for a brassiere and a gold necklace.
A rope tied around
his waist also extended about his groin, binding his
genitalia down into
the gluteal fold. He was lying on his right side with
both hands grasping
magazines depicting females in vaious stages of undress.
Newspaper
advertising supplements showing similiar photographs
were scattered about
his body. An electrode spliced into speaker wire was
taped to each nipple.
These wires ran behind his back, where they were joined,
traversed the anus
and scrotum and were connected to an amplifier.'
Case #4
'A 42 year-old Asian man was found hanging by the neck,
suspended by a rope
attached to the raised shovel of a John Deere Model
JD410, diesel powered,
backhoe tractor...The decedent was suspended in a semi-sitting
position by a
cloth safety harness strap wrapped around his neck and
clipped to a rope
that was hooked to the raised shovel of the backhoe
tractor. A towel was
between the loose fitting strap and the victim's neck.
A long piece of
plastic pipe was connected on one end by conduit tape
to the hydraulic
control lever of the shovel in the operator's compartment
of the tractor. A
broom stick was taped to the other end of the pipe and
was partially under
the decedent's buttocks. The hydraulic shovel could
be easily raised or
lowered by slight pressure applied to the broomstick.
The decedent was fully
clothed, and his genitals were not exposed. No pornographic
materials,
women's clothing items, or mirrors were at the scene...He
had no known
psychiatric illness. Determination of autoerotic death
was made from
decedent history and circumstantial indicators. The
victim kept a journal of
love poetry dedicated to his tractor that he had named
"Stone," outlining
his desire for them to "soar high" together.
The victim was unmarried and
lived with his parents on their farm.'
