What if you wanted a police state, but nobody came
on your hankie?

Back during the Clinton years, with the "put 100,000
policemen on the streets" program that was maybe
able to recruit a tenth of that number, nationwide,
was the first inkling that 'dammit, there just aren't
enough jack-booted thugs to go around!'

Now, there are strong suggestions that a lot of the
"authority" types in the government--the rank and file
*and* their mandarin leaders--are getting fed up with
the constant "go, go, go!" of the "War on Terrorism."

Morale is slipping. Sure, there are critical National
Guard units that do interesting stuff and have now been
on active duty so long they are *like* active duty
soldiers; but how many are just guys--used car salesmen,
fast food restaurant managers, etc., who are just standing
around, doing dumbshit duty like guarding airport terminals
with empty rifles, as their *real* jobs go to hell and at
a fraction of the pay? Boy, that would make *me* want to
re-up!

The numbers are interesting. The INS is losing people
in droves--tired of the bullshit, harassment and demands
that they always be on their toes. Unwilling to do the
"rah, rah, sis-boom-bah" of Homeland Security along with
their regular jobs.

And that's just the bottom line: It's *not* an adventure,
it's *just* a job. I'll do the damn job, but not if you
keep insisting that I say over and over again how much I
fucking love to work and be patriotic and shit.

Oh, what tangled webs we weave,
When first we practice to deceive.
And so, my friend, the simple fact is,
You've got to have a lot of practice.

All of them.

And a SHITTY job at that. I've been a busboy and a mall janitor, but
SOLDIER was the shiitiest. The pay sucks, the hours suck, and they nickel
and dime you to death. All in all, I'd rather be a black cotton picker in
1825 than a soldier in 2002.

It's just a better deal.
