I've been thinking all day that I should sit down and
write something,
just to let out what I feel about today, but I haven't
had the will to
do so. The *urge* hasn't struck, at least until now
when the day is
almost over. I find that even now, I'm just not inspired
to write
stuff about patriotism or terrorism or the Goddamn fucking
TV vultures
milking every bit of sympathy and sorrow out of this,
the so-called
"anniversary" of the day the Conspiracy gave
us another reminder that
we all suck.
I've been doing my best to avoid the pre-fabricated,
canned
remembrances being broadcast on TV today. There's a
lot of good stuff
going on, such as the reading of the names of the lost...but
that
doesn't even begin to cover the names of the ones who
weren't killed,
whose name will never be on TV, who were hurt and who
continue to
hurt. I'm not very impressed by all that symbolic stuff
taking place
at Ground Zero (even the name "Ground Zero"
is pre-fab, a sound bite
coined to mark the moment), however cathartic it may
be for some.
I did hear that at Union Square in Manhattan, where
the barriers
keeping the public out of the area had stood for so
long, many people
are gathering today for what looks to be an all-night
event that is
*completely spontaneous* and unplanned. There is singing
and dancing
and political arguments and art and drums and chanting.
That is
something I'd like to see...and you can bet that we'll
see barely a
mention of this on any TV station or newspaper outside
of New York
City.
Everyone will be thinking and remembering in a different
way today. I
did my job, as I did on this day last year. And for
me, I find the
best thing to do is simply to think about it.
I, along with many millions, may not have lost any immediate
family on
that day; yet I lost many brothers and sisters that
I never knew, and
the tragedy came home to those around me. My Queen's
best friend lost
a close family member and was stuck in New York for
weeks, so she has
been feeling very bad. On FurryMUCK, there is a virtual
memorial in
place for two furry fans (who I never knew) who were
lost when the
towers fell. The CEO of my company lost a close friend
of his on one
of the planes, and so all day at work has been a day
of mourning and
remembrance.
And I'll not forget that on this day last year, many
of you folks on
alt.slack gathered on IRC #subgenius to make sure we
were all safe and
sound. Den Mother Magdalen watched over us and cared
for us. And
Reverend SexMortus saw it all, and he had trouble sleeping
for months
afterwards. We did our best to cheer him up and keep
him going; I,
along with many others, sent him what little I could.
And people say the Church of the SubGenius is JUST A
JOKE. Fuck that.
If there is anything in this Church that can truly be
called Slack, it
is the Slack that SAVED THE LIVES of a lucky few SubGeniuses
in New
York...because they were LATE FOR WORK. They weren't
there when it
happened, and so they are alive today. THAT, dear friends,
is SLACK.
(Now that we can no longer call that day just "September
11th," what
will it be called? "Nine-Eleven," perhaps?)

In 5 years time you can sell "The 911 dialing code
is a memorial to
people who were in a building which got in the way of
some planes." I
also think there is a 7-11 connection, since they often
employ people
who are not white and rich.
