...and does anyone care?

There were peace marches all over the country (and France, too) over
the weekend. Thousands of people sang and marched in the street and
carried their signs saying "Impeach Bush." Just like the sixties,
man!

Except that this isn't the sixties anymore. The Conspiracy learned
its lesson on how to deal with sixties-style protests. In the 1960s,
the anti-war movement had three things on its side: 1) The media was
in its favor. Every anti-war incident got *tons* of press coverage.
2) The government dealt with them poorly -- Kent State being the prime
example. 3) The war itself was badly managed, both from a military
*and* P.R. (which is just as important back home) standpoint. THEY
learned their lessons from Vietnam, which is why these aren't the
sixties anymore.

Over the weekend, thousands of people marched in the street, sang
songs, and then they went home. End of story. They got a few news
stories, and that's it. A few of the dumber ones tried to incite THE
MAN into a confrontation (just like the sixties), except that THE MAN
was ready for it and knew how to handle them in a way that made the
protesters look like fools. And the mega-corporation controlled media
continues to hawk the war, and nothing has changed. War is still
"inevitable," because that's what they want. Unless we do something
*really* stupid, such as nuke Baghdad *and* let CNN, ABC, and the BBS
videotape the entire thing live, then the war will proceed and
President Dubya will be re-elected.

The sixties are over, man.

Well, I thought it was a hoot. First, in the
60s, the Man actively subverted and corrupted
the anti-war movement (we are now learning),
encouraging violence and all the rest.

Now, the self-proclaimed "leaders", the only
people who will be "recognized" by the media
as the "leaders" of the movement, are either
World Socialist Workers (who are really big
in the umbrella organization, embarrassingly
so); or the old standards, the inner circle
of the democratic party's left wing.

Seeing people like William Christopher trying
to say "I am not only one of you, I am in
charge *against* the government", is just
about as silly as seeing Dick Cheney out there
wearing love beads and a tie-dyed t-shirt,
singing "give peace a chance."

More than anything else, the government fears
a de-centralized, un-organized, un-controlled
peace movement. This it will do anything to
prevent.

More on the "official leadership" of the peace
movement. This should make those who are pro-peace
just gag. "All we are saying, is kill it dead
before it can reproduce."

I think I'd freak out ol' Mr Sores jawless wonder
by singing:

"And I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A."

Because, let me tell you, there is NO BETTER WAY
of driving off spectral guilt monsters than to
sing PATRIOTIC SONGS.

It also works great against under-the-bed finger
chompers and nocturnal lung suckers(*).

(*) Never try to avoid a lung sucker by sleeping
on your belly. And I'm really not going to say
why, except that it's really gross.

I did my own miniature media research.

My pal in San Francisco said he saw half a million people protesting
and also a heck of a lot of bared titties.

The AlterNet.org news site said there were realistically probably
200,000 protesting in SF, but that it seemed more like 400,000. It said
the organizers claimed 200,000 in Washington DC despite awful weather.

Yahoo news shows pictures of armored cops shoving back a few angry
youths in Washington DC, who had gotten too close to the White House
fence. So I guess that was their focus. Angry Youths Shoved Back from
White House. If you read the AP news story the first numbers you saw
were "1,000 near the white house" and "500" somewhere else. Later in
the article it said the cops wouldn't say. The last vague number given
was 30,000 although the term "immense throngs" was used.

The Drudge Report mentions no protests, on its front page today.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer mentioned "tens of thousands of protestors"
here and there.

I know that during the Gulf War, there were gigantic protests in San
Francisco which were glossed over on the pop news as being "a few
malcontents".

I took part in the Gulf War protests myself, and that was where I
learned my lesson that sixties-era protest methods don't work anymore
if you want to work real "change" (whatever that is). One protest I
especially remember had a couple of thousand marching through the
streets of Boston, congregating at the Boston Common where they had a
stage set up for the speeches and photo ops, and people passing back
and forth among the crowd with trash bags to collect donations. (How
come we don't do that?) The speeches were the usual "Impeach George
Bush" stuff, and the organizers of the rally claimed that there were
12,000 people in the crowd...when in fact there were maybe 10% to 20%
of that total. And our efforts contributed exactly zero to stopping
or delaying the Gulf War.

On the other hand, yesterday I did read about some folks who took part
in the weekend protests just to make a statement. They were fully
aware that the protests meant nothing, but they did it anyway -- just
to say that they tried. That's as good a reason as any to get out
there and march on the streets, and those folks certainly had the
right idea.

There's also the bared-titty aspect to be considered, although here In
Cleveland I don't think we'll be seeing much of that in January.

My form of war protesting is helping to keep Lonesome Cowboy Dave out
of the concentration camps he keeps talking about on the radio, by
making fun of hi and the camps as if Dave was just hallucinating them.
If I can keep Dave out of the camps I'll feel I've done my part.
