This is a VCD-ready MPG of
"THE DAY OF THE SUBGENIUS"
-- a short film by The Bolex Brothers based on "The
Brag of the
SubGenius" by yours oh so very truly, and on The
Book of the SubGenius.
This is worth the download. It is absolutely unlike
any other SubGenius
video OR audio that we've seen. It's starting to make
the film festival
circuit now, I believe.
It's an MPEG1 video, 320x240 pixels, 29.97 fps, 70 MB in size.
This 8 minute video should play as is on any computer
platform once
it's been extracted from the RAR archive. It's the kind
of mpeg that
can be made directly into a VCD without any conversion.
If used with a
CDR burner that makes VCDs, it'll burn as a VCD that
will play in
modern DVD players like the Apex. (In the Apex, it will
play just fine
off a CDR whether it's burned "as a VCD" or
just as the plain mpeg file
on a plain data CDR.)
The Bolex Brothers (of Bristol, England) are famous
for the weird
stop-motion feature film, "The Secret Adventures
of Tom Thumb," 1993,
and for TV commercials featuring bizarre animation,
such as the
sinister Fanta and Nestea snowman-skeleton that magically
fills out
into a snowman when he drinks his soda pop.
The film uses a combination of live action, cut-outs,
3D and 2D
computer animation, plus some stop-motion models to
depict X-Day.
It's completely SubGenius-like in style, YET OF A SUBGENIUSLY
STYLE
WE'VE NEVER SEEN ELSEWHERE. You'll see what I mean.
This is encoded and posted the same way as the large
files in most of
the movie binaries newsgroups such as alt.binaries.vcd
-- RAR archive
volumes and PARS or parity files.
I haven't seen RARs and PARs used much in a.b.s.; not
many large format
movies get posted here. Didn't used to anyway. This
is my first one,
but I have been busily making both DVD and VCD versions
of all our main
videos, so there's plenty more I could post. PLENTY.
I have never had
any problem downloading the fairly large (30 to 100
mb) movies that
Edfred's posted, so what the heck-fire.
I download whole movies by the truckload from binaries
newsgroups and I
know many of the pitfalls. I have tested this mess of
files to make
sure it all works. That is, I successfully re-opened
the RARs and
played the movie in both Mac OS X and Windows ME.
If you are new to RARs, let me explain.
It's a way of breaking gigantic CDR-sized files like
movies into more
manageable chunks of 10 mb or so for newsgroups. The
PAR files that go
with the RAR archive files are a slick way of making
sure you can still
open and play the movie EVEN IF SEVERAL OF THE RAR FILES
ARE INCOMPLETE
OR MISSING.
In Windows, use WinRAR, available free (shareware) from
downloads.com
or http://www.rarsoft.com/ or http://www.rarlab.com/
PAR (parity) files can make up for damaged or missing
RAR files, using
SmartPar or fsraid:
http://www.fluidstudios.com/fsraid.html
!! EXCELLENT overview and how-tos on downloading, decoding
and playing
movies from newsgroups is at:
http://how.to/abmdivxfaq
Mac users on OSX must use MacPar deluxe -- free from
http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/MacPAR_deLuxe/
Install the program and then double-click the file ending
in .par
This should work even if you are missing some RAR parts.
In Mac OS 9.2 and below, you must use MacRAR (downloads.com
or
http://macrar.free.fr/
Install the program and then double-click on the file
ending in .rar
You will need all the parts for this to work.
I used MarRAR to make the RARs and MacPAR deluxe for
the PARs. In
Windows I was able to reopen them using WinRAR and play
the movie using
Windows Media Player. Real Player or Quicktime should
work too.
Excellent general info on VCDs & software links
are at

Here is the complete list of parts:

Day of the SubGenius.mpg.par
Day of the SubGenius.mpg.r01

Day of the SubGenius.mpg.r04
Day of the SubGenius.mpg.r06
Day of the SubGenius.mpg.r00

Got it to work on my old hot-rodded Mac 7500 with a
G3. Took a bit of
fiddlin' and gave error messages but it played fine.
Well worth the
long down load. Great stuff.

I just watched this a couple of days ago, definitely worth the DL.
