But that DSL line is supposed to go in today!
I spent half the day yesterday -- BEFORE I did the marathon
HTML-ing --
getting my phone lines ready for ADSL. God DAMN! I had
to install this
filter-splitter thingie in such a way that... well,
let me put it this
way. I found myself methodically detaching and reattaching
every strand
of the red-green-yellow-black wires for 8 separate lines,
at this
SubGenius-rigged junction box nailed to the rafters
in my basement in a
mass of cobwebs across the wall from the exterior phone
company NIB
box... and running up and down the stairs each time
checking various
phone lines to figure out which ones would go to the
DSL modem and
which were Wei's other line, etc.
I THINK I got it right.
But since I haven't been getting long luxurious nights
of sleep lately
I'm thinking maybe I better not try to configure the
insides of my
computer's guts and this weird-ass little router box...
wouldn't want
to accidentally yank the machine's heart out, chop off
its head and
stuff its mouth with garlic in some kind of antisleep
delerium, and
then not be able to use either the existing but bankrupt
cable OR the
new mysterious ADSL.
The really sick thing about all this is that I'm pretty
sure I'll
eventually end up with a fucking server running out
of my office
someday, hooked up to my brain with aligator clips and
duct tape.
And I'll LIKE it.
