As if a reason was needed to get away from this little
burg on the Northern
end of Lake Michigan, a posting Alt.Slack told promise
of a DEVIVAL within a
half day drive! Sitting under the plume of lake effect
snow for the past two
weeks, getting away to recharge the insanity batteries
was well timed, being
able to do the trip. Being of such short notice, none
of the local Subs here
could go, but that didn't stop me. Got in touch with
the Left Rev. Eggplant
to secure companionship and a place to crash and headed
out.
On the trip down, I was trying to not get my hopes up
too much for a truly
"saving" or "sickening" experience.
After all, the Devival had only been
posted two days in advance buried in an update posted
by Stang. Not to
motion Wednesday being an "off" night.
Caught up with Eggplant at his place and was treated
to good dinner and a
quite nicely hopped microbrew. Enjoyed a viewing of
some old clips from "The
Ghoul" circa 1970's. Eggplant and I grew up, so
to speak, under the
influence of that oddball and I personally hadn't seen
anything from him
since my exodus to the north country some 23 yrs ago.
We headed over to A-squared from the east side, running
across Davidson past
old haunts. That shortcut served as a good reminder
as to why I'm glad I
left, but that's a different post....
Hit the Heidelberg around ten and sure enough, we were
the only ones there!
Shit, five hour trip for nothin! Someone started to
set up some DJ 'tables
and decorating candles with Dobbsheads. It turned out
to be the host for the
evening, Rev. DJ Bud Sonic of The Church of the Miraculous
10mm Box Wrench.
Sonic got some tunes goin and folks started trickling
in. It was a rather
odd scene. Alot of people kinda sittin off on their
own. You look over in
their direction and wonder "Does this one carry
the Sub-Genius Gene?" After
a couple of libations folks started to loosen up, and
the word of "Bob"
started to fill the room. It was nice to get back in
touch with Rev. Java
Matrix and the ever so cute Solcat, having not seen
them since meeting at
X-Day last.
Sonic started to get things going on the Mic and Theremin.
It was obvious
there was going to be Hellfire Preachin' tonight! Yours
truly took the stage
for a rant followed by the observations of Rev Eggplant.
The call of the
mice with the response of Rev Ed Fred at the front of
the crowd helped keep
us ranters going. Rev Andrew of the First Church of
the Atlantic
(Dehydrated) gave a stand up performance that managed
to get an unknown
member of the audience to become "saved"!
Yes, the Church convinced it's
newest member to lay his $30 on the pulpit and pull
the wool over his own
eyes in the name of "Bob"! Rev. Java Matrix
rounded out the mini devival
with a moving tirade on the being of a Geek.
All in all, despite it being an off night with a few
first or second time
ranters, the devival was a success none the less. We
managed to "save" a
newcomer, and get together with some friends and make
a few new ones.
After the 'preachin, the Nights of the Round Tables
took to mixin some very
tasty Beats and Grooves, served Chilled. This participant
was very surprised
to see that none of the 30 or so people in attendance
left during our
somewhat unorganized display, and after getting earshot
of these guys, I
understood why. Sensual, Bonobo inspiring flights of
Aural orgasm to help
all them fine lookin young ladies in attendance look
all that much sweeter.
These boys got the goods! Rev DJ Bud Sonic has been
hosting this Wednesday
night thing and has definitely helped to set up a very
laid back atmosphere
in a sane environment with a volume that helps keep
people socializing. If
you need something to do in Ann Arbor on a Wednesday
night, keep this one in
mind.
Those of us who participated hung around and shared
hospitality until
closing time. This was not the largest devival by any
means, but some worthy
folks crawled out of the woodwork to get here and participate.
The general
mood was that this will happen again, and I'll certainly
do what I can to
alert folks further ahead of time.

Yeah, I happened to get to the email about the devival
rather late in
my post-vacation catch-up, and I was juggling so many
things at once
that each individual thing got done at the speed of
a glacier.
Every time somebody offers to take over a section of
SubSITE so as to
spread the load, I say okay. What can I say, I'm still
the only one
doing that particular section, the "newdevivals.html"
page.
Thanks for writing up this report. It sounds like an
actually Slackful
atmosphere, with a ton of leeway for audience participation.
The Amino Acids and me and a nice bar in Detroit are
working on
scheduling a "big" devival there, the "show"
kind, which I have high
hopes for.
There's probably going to be one in Cleveland again
at the Beachland
Ballroom, we just keep not setting a date, don't ask
me why. Part of it
is that I have a shitload of geek stuff I am happy to
be working on,
and big shows, while well worth it, well, they involve
strenuous
physical exertion and I am increasingly inclined to
let the youths do
that shit.
"No, let's WALK down there, and fuck ALL those cows."
I like the idea of these more laid back ones... I can
RELAX and NOT
WORK at those, vicariously. Especially if I'm not there.
