It DOES sound different. More globular. The theramin is the most primitive
audio synthesizer, I guess you could say. It's a little box that
translates magnetic field variations near its sensor antenna -- such as
hands or titties waving around it -- into analog sounds. When the
spaceship is flying through space in THIS ISLAND EARTH and the weird music
is going "OOOOooooEEEEEEEeee OOOOOOOO", that's a theramin.
Flitting and warbling your hands near it makes a very different sound
than, say, leaning your head into it.
I believe that Edmund Scientific sells a do it yourself theramin kit.
