From YOUR BOSS to the Jerry Springer show, the proof is all around us. DEVO shouted out the warning, and as they expected, none but the brave heeded.
Yet the brave gathered last night, Sept. 16, 0 B.X., at the Secret A.C.E./SubGenius Hide-Out in Cleveland for the Day of Atonement, the gathering of the ULTIMATE GEEKS -- of which number I, Stang, am proud to count myself. SILICA GEL's Michael Pilmer was the main organizer, with our own Rev. Toth Wilder handling the local aspects.
To atone for our lack of discipline, we spuds gawked at truly obscure memorabilia, watched extremely rare and/or recent videotapes (including a hilarious tour of Mutato Musika by Rev. Mark Mothersbaugh), toured Akron, danced and spazzed to DEVO cover band DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE, and original Akron punk core band, C.D. TRUTH, and generally we just WALLOWED IN OUR GEEKINESS and TRUE NERDFULSOMESHIP.
I got there ONE MINUTE TOO LATE to meet the progenitor and sire of half the Devoes, GENERAL BOY. But I did get to meet many Beautiful Mutants who were new to me, and to swap tales of woe and valor with old SubGenius friends who happened to be fellow DevoTees. I preached and told every bit of sex-related gosip I could think of about Jerry Casale and Rev. Mothersbaugh, for which I was profusely thanked by two talented DEVO ART GIRLS, as I am temporarily calling them until I find out who they are, who (like ANOTHER, SEPARATE person) came up from Tampa, Florida. Indeed, almost everybody there was from somewhere besides Cleveland.
I would have to call the event a STUNNING SUCCESS. There were even more tens of people than I'd expected, and I'm sure that everyone there felt just as miraculously BATHED in DEVOLUTION as I did. Several X-Day Drill attendees commented on how X-Day-Drillian it was. I predict that the next DEVOTIONAL Day of Atonement will be twice as big and spectacular, and I REALLY hope they hold it HERE again. Furthermore, General Boy promised that he would make one of the lads attend, next time.
These pictures were all shot by Princess Wei "R." Doe, the most meautiful of all the Beautants.
