You shoulda heard Glen Beck rant about how torture for these people is ok,
because these people aren't truly human.

(have I heard that argument before?)

Anything the CIA can do is nothing compared with eternal damnation of hell
which is exactly where they are headed anyway. Why the fuss? God is all
about love ... until you cross him then look out he'll kick your ass. It's
all consistent when you view it through a good Xtian lens.

NPR did and interview this morning with George Lakoff who does a great job
of explaining why Liberals feel like we are living in a nation with aliens.
We are speaking a different language for one thing.

He's got a page on UC Berkeley with some of the ideas he discussed today:

Good reference piece, thanks for posting it.

In school, I got to help a Spanish woman who
was do her PhD on linguists. Her project was
that she'd developed a political action verb
classification system of 34 types, and was
using a computer to analyze lexicostatistics
(word counts) and glottochronology (how words
change over time). Mostly all we were doing was
going through popular literature and news from
South America and entering the words with
classification numbers into the computer. But
yeah, there are some odd language variations.

I sure have heard it on THIS newsgroup. After all, the FAQ simply
says "FUCK YOU ASSHOLE!" That's one small problem with being a Yeti:
many people think that means they're supposed to run at you with a
Norelco and try to SHAVE you, which leads to the neck-stump-fucking
thing and a lot of Swiffering.

As I've been saying for a long time, Gitmo is just
a front to attract the attention of everyone who
wants to interfere. All the real stuff goes on in
facilities around the world. Diego Garcia is also
alleged to be a big one, and I'm sure there are
many more. One unknown location is called "The
Hotel California."

It also gets into the grey area of when is it a US
deal, and when is it somebody elses. They may own
it and let the CIA use it, or they might use it with
the CIA giving "assistance", or etc.

You really don't need much of an infrastructure to
set one up. It's a big world.

And then you have to parse the word "torture". The
original difference between torture and interrogation
was not means, but intent. Interrogation wanted
information. Torture was just for sadistic pleasure.

In this case, there is a huge encyclopedia of
"torture" that the US can use before delving into
physical pain. For example, to be controlled by a
woman, for some of these guys, is equal to having
their hand crushed with a hammer, as far as discomfort
goes. So would be eating pork.

Then there are any number of psychological tricks,
well before doing nasty stuff like sleep deprivation.
Some are "torture" by international convention, some
are "torture" by partial international non-binding
agreement, and some by consensus. What Amnesty Int'l
calls "torture", in its entirety, almost NO nation
agrees to.

Last but not least, there are new technologies that
cause no pain, but are terribly invasive. No
agreement exists as to whether they are torture or
not, yet, though many would find them intrusive.

Well I don't want to hear anybody say they're surprised. I will make
you all put your heads down on your desks if I do.

They were very clear in the wake of 9/11 that they needed to be free
to pursue "other means" which had been denied them previously in the
pursuit of terrorists, and everybody said "YEAH OK OK WE JUST DON'T
WANNA HEAR THE GORY DETAILS, OK?"

Nobody raised much of a hue and cry about it then. Largely because,
in the next breath, they started talking about suspending civil
liberties. The thought that -they- could have the FBI snooping
through their porn stash is more disturbing for most Americans than
that some vaguely defined wog terrorist might get his nuts bitten off
by a gaurd dog for laughs.

Partly too though; if you want to make people forget something, just
tell them during a moment of stress. When people get mugged, for
instance, it's fairly common for them to amnesia the whole experience
away.

When the devil wants you to sign on the dotted line, he waits till
you're at the end of your rope. That's how you can tell the
difference between "Bob" and the devil (often a hazy distinction).
When "Bob" wants you to sign on the dotted line, he just shows you
some tits.
