I generally avoid commenting on the news stories we see here on the
Internet that cast the United States as the Great Satan -- not because
I think we're the paragon of innocent, purity and goodness, but rather
because there seem to be a great number of people willing to pounce
upon the least shred of evidence or conjecture and spam it all over
the place, denouncing the "American Unholy War Against Innocent
Iraqis" and "Bush's Support Of Zionist Terrorism" and the like.

But on the other hand, it's interesting to see how stories like this
one at the BBC aren't plastered all over the news. Just over the past
couple of days we've seen and heard lots and lots of words and
pictures about President Bush appearing before the 9/11 commission in
private, and the transfer of authority to Iraqi locals in the Falujah
area. But we've barely seen anything at all about this.

Who does a skeptical American turn to when he doesn't trust his own
media? Why, the British Bullshit Corporation of course. AKA, British
Branch of the CON.

I'm not saying the BBC is a paragon of the kind of old-fashioned
democratic journalistic integrity you wish you could believe in. I'm
just saying the BBC is marginally less beholden to *American* corporate
interests.

In regards to domestic politics, this is a major event. Centrist-to-left
leaning folks have been saying words like"Regardless of our national
leadership, we support the troops". Now this is in jeopardy, thanks to a few
sadistic asshats.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

They left out the most important detail:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1206725,00.html

"The scandal has also brought to light the growing and largely
unregulated role of private contractors in the interrogation of
detainees."

Story A: poorly trained troops exceed their authoritay in otherwise
isolated incident.

Story B: US uses private contractors to circumvent military law in
routine abuse of prisoners.

Are they "private contractors" or "mercenaries"?....

In any case there's a few of the olde Sud Afrikaans Boer and
Zimbabwe/Rhodesian boys keeping up the tradition of tough policing.

I like Chomsky's take on "Support our troops"...it has about as much
meaning as "Support Idaho".

I saw a sign in a grocery store for "Yukon" potatoes.
WTF? They got snow potatoes now?
Maybe they're just moose turds wrapped in snow.

I believe BBC still operates under a Govt. mandate, (much like the CBC)
so you can have relatively more confidence in what they're reporting.
Still, subtle pressures can be applied, like funding cuts for instance,
which is what happened to the CBC a few years ago. There's also an
inherent cultural bias, but I suppose you'll get that anywhere.

Every now and then, it's fun to kick a sacred cow, if only to see how
loud they'll moo. BBC's OK. I still prefer the Guardian, but hey,
nothing beats the Sun.... especially page three!!!!

The BBC World Service had really ought to change it's name to the BBC Spank
America Hour.

Right, wrong, or just all fucked up on codeine, those pissy English accents
do make me grind my teeth.

"Today in sport it was Lancastershire over Wankershire by three wickets
in the fourth outing. Day 4 of play between Mancaster and Wankarser
ended with a play in the eighth hour to pull Wankarser within 19 wickets
of a win. And that's the sport."
